Kyosho CAP 232 - 40 Author: Mitch Mabbutt

CAP 232 after it's maiden flightCAP 232 & TT91 engine

Based on the famous French Breitling colour scheme and over powered by a Thunder Tiger 91 four stroke, this plane is awesome.

From other examples of this type I have noticed that the recommenced 52 sized Four stroke wasn't really big enough to give a scale performance. I was saving for a laser 80 which was a possible power plant for this project, but then the Thunder Tiger 91 arrived on the scene!

The TT91 Four Stoke is incredibly cheap for what it is. Costing just over half the price of an O.S. or Laser of the same size, it had to be worth buying!

I reinforced the firewall with 1" triangular hard balsa because the factory installed sections were really doing much. I also made a custom soft mount for the engine to reduce vibration and  noise. The aileron servos were installed in radioactive wing mounts built into the centre of each wing to give more positive control.

Flying..

Well it doesn't need much of the strip to take off on, but it needs all of it to land. the extra weight (approx' 7oz heavier than it should be), means you have to bring it in at speed. The large prop/engine don't help to stop it either. While it's in the air it is magic. everyone comments on how nice it sounds. the only problem I have with it it trying to get it to fly at scale speed and get the revs to match it. The stall turns are interesting and the prop hanging is a bit tricky (The real one prop hangs with the engine flat out - this one climbs vertical instead). If the engine were a 70 to 80 I would say it would probably be about right.

Do we like this 'plane - Oh yes we do!
